The Main Street Freedom Act: Unleashing Florida’s Local Economy
The Problem: Florida’s tax code is currently rigged against the "little guy." While multi-national corporations have armies of lawyers to navigate complex regulations and exploit loopholes, our local mechanics, barbers, restaurant owners, and tech startups are drowning in red tape and nuisance taxes.
The government shouldn't be punishing you for trying to start a business in your hometown.
The Solution: As your State Senator, I will introduce the Florida Main Street Freedom Act. This bill is not a bailout and it is not a subsidy. It is a bold reduction of government interference designed to level the playing field for Floridian-owned businesses.
1. Abolish the "Tax on Tools" for Small Business
-
The Issue: Currently, businesses pay a "Tangible Personal Property Tax" on equipment—computers, furniture, and machinery. This tax punishes entrepreneurs for investing in their own success.
-
My Plan: I will raise the exemption threshold from $25,000 to $100,000.
-
The Result: This effectively eliminates the property tax bill for the vast majority of local small businesses, while ensuring massive out-of-state corporations still pay their fair share.
2. End the Paperwork Nightmare
-
The Issue: Thousands of small Florida businesses spend more money hiring accountants to file state tax returns than they actually owe in taxes. This is government waste at its worst.
-
My Plan: Establish a "Micro-Business Filing Waiver." If your business creates less than $250,000 in revenue, you shouldn't even have to file a state corporate return.
-
The Result: Less time dealing with the Department of Revenue, and more time growing your business and being with your family.
3. The "Local Job Creator" Credit
-
The Issue: Big Box stores send their profits to Wall Street. Local businesses spend their profits here in Volusia County.
-
My Plan: I will fight for a remittance credit specifically for businesses with fewer than 50 employees and fewer than 3 locations. This allows local owners to keep a larger percentage of the sales tax they collect for the state.
-
The Result: We keep capital in our community, rewarding the businesses that actually drive our local economy.
My Promise
I don’t believe in using the tax code to pick winners and losers, but I do believe in removing the shackles that hold our local economy back. The Main Street Freedom Act subtracts government from your life so that Volusia County can thrive.
